Most Recent School Violence 

In many of these incidents involving guns one or more students knew that the student had threatened to bring a gun to school. No one reported them because they did not think that the threats were real.  Please take these threats seriously and tell us about them.  Help keep your schools safe.

 


An Explosion of Violence
Feb. 7, 2002:  Three 16-year-old high school students were wounded in a shooting in front of a Chicago high school at dismissal, according to police.  One female victim was a student at the school where the shooting two place and the two other victims, who were males, were students from a nearby high school.  Police suspect that the incident was gang-related.                                                  BACK TO TOP

 

Jan. 15, 2002:  Two students, ages 17 and 18, were shot in a fourth-floor hallway of a Manhattan, NY high school.  One student was shot in the back and the other in the buttocks, and both were hospitalized in serious condition.  A .380-caliber handgun was found on the school's fifth floor and the incident may have resulted from a dispute concerning a girl, according to police. No suspects were identified.

Dec. 5, 2001:  A 17-year-old male alternative high school student in Springfield, MA, was arrested for stabbing a 51-year-old counselor five to six times in the stomach and chest during an argument in a classroom.  The suspect fled from the building and was arrested about a half-mile from the school, according to the county prosecutor. The knife was found behind the school.  Eight or nine other students and a teacher were in the classroom at the time according to the school's superintendent.                                 BACK TO TOP

 

Nov. 30, 2001:  A junior high school campus in Friendswood, TX was locked down for three hours after a bullet was fired into a classroom wall, striking a plastic cup and then a teacher's desk. At the time of the incident, 18 students were in the class, but nobody was injured.  The slug was fired from a .38-caliber or .357-caliber gun                                                                        BACK TO TOP

 

Nov. 27, 2001:  A 15-year-old male high school student in Columbia, SC was arrested after a .380-caliber handgun carried in his book bag fired when he accidentally dropped his bag.  The student reportedly ran away and put the gun in the trunk of another student's vehicle, but school officials and the school resource officer located the students moments later.  No one was injured and the student was charged.                                                        BACK TO TOP

 

Nov. 12, 2001:  A 17-year-old male alternative school student in Caro, Michigan, armed with a .22-caliber rifle, a 20-guage shotgun, and a package of gunpowder took a teacher and 15-year-old female classmate hostage, shot at the principal, and then shot himself in the head after releasing his hostages.  The suspect, who died, reportedly was despondent after having broken up with his girlfriend two days earlier.  The hostages were released after being held over a period of three hours, at which time the suspect shot himself as police tactical officers were preparing to enter the building.                                                         BACK TO TOP

 

October 26, 2001: A 16-year-old male high school student in Redondo Beach, CA  was shot in his left side, piercing a lung before exiting his body, when a friend's handgun accidentally fired as the backpack tumbled off a ledge outside the school around 10am in the morning.                                                                         BACK TO TOP

 

October 12, 2001: 17-year-old male student in Salt Lake City, Utah committed suicide in a hallway in his school.                                                                          BACK TO TOP

 

Sept. 20, 2001:  A 17-year-old male 11th-grader in Baltimore, MD was shot at a doorway in the back of the school by a suspect who allegedly grabbed him by the collar and shot him in the stomach.  The victim ran and was shot again in the buttocks.  School officials said the victim was off school grounds without permission before the shooting occurred.                                                       BACK TO TOP

 

Sept. 4, 2001:  A 6-year-old mentally handicapped first-grader in Plant City, FL accidentally fired a .22-caliber gun when he stuffed his hand into his right pants pocket to get some change as he was standing behind his desk waiting to go to physical education class.  Police were investigating where the boy got the gun.           BACK TO TOP

 

Mar. 30, 2001: Neal Boyd Jr, 16, was killed outside Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana. He was shot by a 17 year old former student.                                  BACK TO TOP 

 

Mar. 5, 2001: Charles Andrew Williams, 15, kills two and wounds 15, after firing from a bathroom at Santana High School.                                                         BACK TO TOP 

May 26, 2000: 1 teacher, Barry Grunow, shot and killed at Lake Worth Middle School in Florida by 13-year-old boy with .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol on the last day of classes.                                                                          BACK TO TOP 

Feb. 29, 2000: 6-year-old Kayla Rolland shot dead at Buell Elementary School near Flint, Mich. The assailant is identified as a six-year-old boy with a .32-caliber handgun.                                                      BACK TO TOP  

  

Dec. 6, 1999: A 13-year-old student in Fort Gibson, Okla., allegedly arrived at school and opened fire with his father's 9 mm semiautomatic handgun. There were no life-threatening injuries but five of his classmates were injured, four from gunshot wounds and a fifth who suffered bruises in the chaos.                                                       BACK TO TOP     

                            

Nov. 19, 1999: A 12-year-old boy allegedly shot and killed a female classmate at the end of lunch hour outside a middle school in Deming, N.M., about 33 miles from the Mexican border. The boy was wearing a camouflage jacket when he allegedly fired the single shot from a .22-caliber handgun.

April 20, 1999: Two young men wearing long, black trench coats opened fire in a suburban high school in Littleton, Colo., injuring as many as 20 students. In all, 15 were killed, including the two gunmen.

June 15, 1998: A male teacher and a female guidance counselor are shot in a hallway at a Richmond, Va., high school. The man suffers an injury to the abdomen that wasn’t life threatening; the woman is reportedly grazed.

May 21, 1998: A 15-year-old student in Springfield, Ore., expelled the day before for bringing a gun to school, allegedly opens fire in the school cafeteria. Two students are killed. The suspect’s parents are later found shot dead in their home.

May 21, 1998: Three sixth-grade boys had a “hit list” and were plotting to kill fellow classmates on the last day of school in a sniper attack during a false fire alarm, police in St. Charles, Mo., say.

May 21, 1998: A 15-year-old boy dies from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in Onalaska, Wash. Earlier in the day, the boy boarded a high school bus with a gun in hand, ordered his girlfriend off the bus and took her to his home, where he shot himself.

May 21, 1998: A 15-year-old girl is shot and wounded at a suburban Houston high school when a gun in the backpack of a 17-year-old classmate goes off in a biology class. The boy is charged with a third-degree felony for taking a gun to school.

May 19, 1998: Two boys are suspended from school in Johnston, R.I., after being accused of writing and handing out threatening notes to classmates. The notes said things such as, “All your friends are dead.” The boys are ordered to remain out of school until they have been evaluated to determine whether they are dangerous

May 19, 1998: Three days before his graduation, an 18-year-old honor student allegedly opens fire in a parking lot at Lincoln County High School in Fayetteville, Tenn., killing a classmate who was dating his exgirlfrend.

April 28, 1998: Two teenage boys are shot to death and a third is wounded as they played basketball at a Pomona, Calif., elementary school hours after classes had ended. A 14-year-old boy is charged; the shooting is blamed on rivalry between two groups of youths.

April 24, 1998 : A 48-year-old science teacher is shot to death in front of students at graduation dance in Edinboro, Pa. A 14-year-old student at James W. Parker Middle School is charged.

March 24, 1998: Four girls and a teacher are shot to death and 10 others wounded during a false fire alarm at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Ark., when two boys, ages 11 and 13, open fire from the woods. Both are convicted in juvenile court of murder and can be held up to age 21   .

Dec. 1, 1997: Three students are killed and five others wounded while they take part in a prayer circle in a hallway at Heath High School in West Paducah, Ky. A 14-year-old student pleads guilty but mentally ill to murder and is serving life in prison. One of the wounded girls is left paralyzed.

Oct. 1, 1997: A 16-year-old outcast in Pearl, Miss., is accused of killing his mother, then going to Pearl High School and shooting nine students. Two of them die, including the suspect's ex-girlfriend. The 16-year-old is sentenced to life in prison. Two others await trial on accessory charges.

Feb. 19, 1997: A 16-year-old student opens fire with a shotgun in a common area at the Bethel, Alaska, high school, killing the principal and a student. Two other students are wounded. Authorities later accuse two other students of knowing the shootings would take place. Evan Ramsey was sentenced to two 99-year terms.

Feb. 2, 1996: A 14-year-old boy wearing a trench coat walks into algebra class with a hunting rifle and allegedly opens fire, killing the teacher and two students. A third student is injured during the shooting at a junior high school in Moses Lake, Wash.
