MOM FOUNDED WEBSITE FOR TEENS TO REPORT THREATS OF VIOLENCE

It is a fact that most children in America feel that they do not need to tell anyone when they know of someone who is threatening to bring a gun to school. Most of these children do not take these threats seriously. They feel that they shouldn’t tell on a friend. Some children don’t tell an adult because they think that the adult won’t understand. ReportSomeone.com is an online resource for teens to use when reporting threats of violence. They can make the report from their home, where most feel safe. They can remain anonymous and because they use the Internet their friends do not need to know they are making the report.

Nancy Brown, a mother of 4 children, and a grandmother of two, founded ReportSomeone.com after an incident involving her son, his friends, and a gun. Last year Nancy’s son was in eighth grade. A teenager in the neighborhood wanted to buy a gun and gave two boys a total of $750. Not one child told an adult, for the same reasons that most teenagers don’t report these types of incidents. Nancy was distraught when she found that her son would not and did not report this incident to her. Nancy talked with at least 10 of her son’s friends and they all agreed that they would not tattle on anyone.

Nancy is the same as any other mother in America. She loves her children and expects them to be safe in school. But that is not reality and children are killed all too often in our schools. In most school shootings there have been friends who knew that the person had been making threats. If the teens felt safe to make these reports they would have saved many lives.

Nancy’s son is now 15 years old and helped contribute to the website content and design. He showed great interest in helping her. Nancy asked him if he would use a website such as this to report threats from teenagers and he said, "Yes, if I knew the web address".

This is why we need the public’s support to make every parent and child in the United States aware of ReportSomeone.com. Our children now have a resource to report these threats of violence and unless they are aware of it, they cannot use this effective resource.

Nancy Brown is also the founder of Parents Eyes, a non-profit nationwide teenage bumper sticker program. Her program has helped save many teenagers lives by encouraging them to develop safe driving habits. The toll free telephone number for that program is 888-530-Teen. She is also the President of Alexis Mya Publishing. In May 2000 she founded YourMilitary.com, which provides detailed community information for all military installations nationwide. She most recently has been accepted in the 2001 issue of The National Registry of Who’s Who.
